Egyptian Fuel Prices Fixed Amid Global Uncertainty

Egypt's Automatic Pricing Committee recently announced new fixed prices for gasoline and diesel, as well as an amendment to the price equation in light of increased global crude oil and petroleum product prices, as well as the exchange rate of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar. 

The committee fixed the prices of all types of gasoline at 8.75 pounds per liter of 80-gasoline, 10.25 pounds per liter of 92-gasoline, and 11.50 pounds per liter of 95-gasoline, as well as fixing the selling price of a ton of diesel for non-electricity and food industries at 6000 pounds per ton. 

This announcement came after the committee's decision to raise the price of gasoline in the first quarter meeting of 2023. The committee meets quarterly to review the price equation and implement the mechanism for applying automatic pricing. 

However, there are expectations of a decrease in global energy prices, with Dr. Salah Hafez, former vice president of the General Petroleum Corporation, stating that the World Bank expected global energy prices to drop by 26% during the current year. Additionally, natural gas prices in Europe and the United States are expected to halve between 2022 and 2023. 

Fuel and food prices still receive the highest subsidy rates within the basket of subsidized goods and services provided by the government, meaning that lower fuel prices globally will reduce the value of subsidies and potentially reduce the budget deficit. 

While the Automatic Pricing Committee's decision to fix prices may provide some stability, it is worth noting that global energy prices are subject to significant volatility and uncertainty. This makes it difficult for governments to accurately predict and respond to changes in the market. 

Egypt's fuel prices may be affected by global factors outside of the government's control, which could lead to potential fluctuations in domestic fuel prices. As such, it is important for policymakers to remain vigilant and adaptive in their approach to fuel pricing, taking into account both domestic and international factors.
