Extra Layers and Free Transport: Anzac Day in Canberra
April 24, 2023

Anzac Day is a day of remembrance and respect for the sacrifices made by Australia and New Zealand’s armed forces. This year, on April 25th, those wishing to attend the Dawn Service or Veterans’ March at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra will need to prepare for the possibility of fog. According to the forecast, the Territory will be underneath a high-pressure system, which could see a misty blanket form over the city due to light winds and lingering moisture. Therefore, extra layers will be a must for those attending the outdoor events.
While the forecast minimum of 7 degrees Celsius is technically 1.5 degrees warmer than average, that can make little difference when there’s moisture in the air. However, the predicted sunny top of 22 degrees should provide some relief for attendees. Nevertheless, if you’re attending either the Dawn Service or Veterans’ March, leaving your car at home is highly recommended due to limited parking and road closures in place throughout the day.
To make it as easy as possible for everyone to attend the events without the hassle of finding a park around the Australian War Memorial, free transport is available through Transport Canberra’s “Register to Ride” service. This service is completely free and easy to sign up for on the Transport Canberra website. It provides Canberrans with peace of mind knowing that bus travel to both the Dawn Service and Veterans’ March has been arranged, and it also helps Transport Canberra better monitor and manage demands for the bus services.
Knowing how many buses are required is important for special events and commemorative ceremonies like Anzac Day, where demand is high. That's why Transport Canberra encourages people to register for the service in advance. Register to Ride pick-up locations for the Dawn Service include Gungahlin Bus Station, Westfield Belconnen, Woden Bus Station, Tuggeranong Bus Station, and continuous loop shuttles from City Bus Station, Russell Offices, and the Canberra Centre. Continuous loop shuttle buses for the Veterans’ March will pick up from Russell Offices and Canberra Centre via the City Bus Station.
Return services for both the Dawn Service and Veterans’ March will depart 20 minutes after each ceremony. Passengers do not need to register for return travel, but they should be prepared to wait in line for a seat. Overall, the “Register to Ride” service is an excellent option for those who want to avoid the hassle of driving and parking, especially on a day that holds so much significance for many Australians.
In summary, Anzac Day in Canberra promises to be a memorable day of remembrance and reflection. Attendees should prepare for the possibility of fog by wearing extra layers, but they can also take advantage of Transport Canberra’s “Register to Ride” service to avoid the hassle of driving and parking. By using this free service, attendees can travel to the Dawn Service and Veterans’ March with peace of mind, knowing that bus travel has been arranged and that they are contributing to the overall management of demand for the service.
